Fourth Year - Spring 2015
For this project, the First Federal Bank building in Birmingham, AL, was renovated and repurposed to work as rentable offices. The two lower floors of the four-story building, which were the emphasis of the design, were adapted to include an open-office concept, while the two upper floors served as private offices. The design strategy consisted of defining the existing double-height space by incorporating a yellow screen wall that adapts to the functions of its surrounding spaces.
Video was used as a research and design tool to comprehend precedents and the designed spaces. It helped capture some of the unexpected experiential moments of the design that are difficult to visualize through 2D drawings.

Welcoming Environmental Restaurant
The design strategy was to generate a welcoming atmosphere that could be educational and engaging. Vertical farming was showcased through some areas of the restaurant to instruct people on the objectives of the REV Center and the production of food, Some of the materials like coffee-stained wood and recycled chandeliers and chairs were chosen to articulate the spaces and engage the viewers visually and physically.
This square composition aims at conceptually capturing the design strategy. The underlying log cabin quilt pattern alludes to the inviting atmosphere of the restaurant. The material folds reference the wrapping wall concept adapted as a design structure for the layout of materials within the restaurant.
